Public health believe the measles virus is actively circulating in the community, and one case has the potential to affect up to 15 others if they have not been vaccinated or previously had measles. It's important to note that measles is only infectious to those who have no immunity to the virus – we get immunity by vaccination or having previously had the disease.
Currently, vaccination rates in the city are below 80%, falling short of our ideal target of 95% for achieving herd immunity. Our primary focus is to emphasise a crucial message – it's never too late to get vaccinated. Your GP will have details of your vaccination status if you are not sure.
Measles: Know the symptoms. Cold-like symptoms typically precede a rash, and these may include:
Children are infectious four days before the rash and for four full days from the onset of the rash and should not attend school. Please see your GP if you are worried.
