Homework

Homework at Our School

At our school, we believe homework should support children’s learning without placing unnecessary pressure on families. We don’t give homework for every subject. Instead, we focus on what’s most important for your child at each stage. Key skills such as multiplication, spelling, handwriting, and phonics (where appropriate) are always prioritised, along with tasks chosen to suit the needs of the class. Our approach keeps homework meaningful, manageable, and helpful for your child’s progress.

Reception

In F2, homework is about fostering a love of learning at home. We encourage daily story sharing and practising sounds and tricky words from phonics. Occasionally, we may send simple activities for counting or early writing.

Year 1

Homework in Year 1 focuses on daily reading, practising phonics, and simple spellings. We also encourage handwriting practice and basic number work to build strong maths foundations.

Year 2

In Year 2, homework includes regular reading, weekly spellings, and handwriting practice. Short maths activities, such as number bonds, are set to build confidence with calculations.

Year 3

Homework in Year 3 includes daily reading, weekly spellings, and handwriting practice. Children also begin learning times tables, and short maths tasks may be sent to reinforce key concepts. Pupils’ will also be asked to research a topical issue in the news to present to their classmates.

Year 4

For Year 4, homework focuses on reading, spellings, handwriting, and times table recall, which is essential for the Year 4 multiplication check. Extra tasks may be given when helpful. Pupils’ will also be asked to research a topical issue in the news to present to their classmates.

Year 5

Year 5 pupils should read daily and practise weekly spellings. Handwriting and times tables remain important. Occasionally, we may set extra maths or grammar tasks to prepare for Upper Key Stage 2 learning. Pupils’ will also be asked to research a topical issue in the news to present to their classmates.

Year 6

Homework in Year 6 helps prepare pupils for secondary school. This includes daily reading, spelling and handwriting practice, and times tables revision. Some extra maths or English tasks may be set to support SATs preparation. Pupils will also be asked to research a topical issue in the news to present to their classmates.
