English

Curriculum & Teaching (Intent)

At Slater Primary School, we are dedicated to fostering a love of language and literacy that empowers all children to become confident readers, writers, and communicators. Our English curriculum provides a rich, inclusive learning experience that reflects our diverse, multi-cultural, and multi-faith community. English acts as a gateway to understanding the world, connecting pupils to diverse cultures, histories, and ideas.

We aim to inspire curiosity and creativity through reading, writing, and oracy, ensuring pupils develop the skills to express themselves clearly and thoughtfully.

Personal Development & Wellbeing (Implementation)

Our curriculum integrates reading, writing, and oracy through carefully sequenced lessons and diverse texts that reflect global perspectives and local heritage. We provide structured opportunities for discussion, debate, and presentation to build confidence and communication skills. Reading and writing tasks are linked to foundation subjects, enabling pupils to make meaningful connections across the curriculum. Inclusive practices ensure every child sees themselves represented in the texts studied. Extracurricular activities such as book clubs and author visits extend learning beyond the classroom.

Achievement (Impact)

Children develop strong reading comprehension, fluent writing skills, and confident speaking abilities. They leave with a deep appreciation for literature and the ability to interpret, critique, and create texts across genres. Pupils demonstrate resilience, creativity, and cultural awareness, applying their literacy skills to real-world contexts and cross-curricular learning. Progress is evident in their ability to articulate ideas, write with clarity, and engage critically with texts.
