History

Curriculum & Teaching (Intent)

At Slater Primary School, our history curriculum reflects our inner-city, multicultural community. We aim to inspire curiosity and a deep understanding of the past, enabling pupils to appreciate the rich tapestry of cultures and events that have shaped both our local area and the wider world.

Our goals include:

• Reflect Diversity: Incorporate histories of various cultures so all pupils see themselves represented.

• Foster Critical Thinking: Encourage questioning, evidence evaluation, and informed perspectives.

• Build Chronological Understanding: Provide a coherent narrative of local, national, and global history.

• Connect Past and Present: Show how historical events influence contemporary society.

Personal Development & Wellbeing (Implementation)

We engage pupils through local heritage resources, museum visits, and immersive experiences. Lessons integrate diverse perspectives and active learning strategies such as debates and source analysis. Teachers receive ongoing professional development to deliver inclusive, dynamic lessons.

Achievement (Impact)

Pupils develop empathy, respect, and analytical skills. They can critically assess sources, understand bias, and construct well-founded arguments. By the end of KS2, pupils demonstrate a strong sense of identity and community, informed by historical knowledge that prepares them for active citizenship.
